Understanding warts and verrucae

Warts and verrucae are caused by a virus. Warts often feel firm and rough; a verruca is a wart on the foot and may be painful under pressure. They can resolve naturally, although this may take a long time.

At SR Integrated Health & Wellness, we assess suitable benign lesions and discuss whether treatment is appropriate for your concern.

Your treatment options

Depending on the lesion, you may be advised about observation, pharmacy treatment, CryoPen or further medical advice. There is no single approach that suits every wart or verruca.

CryoPen uses targeted freezing and may be offered for suitable lesions at our Skin Lesion Clinic. We explain why it is being proposed, the alternatives, the expected reaction and the costs before you decide.

When to seek medical advice first

See a GP if a growth changes appearance, bleeds, is very large or painful, or repeatedly returns. Facial or genital warts need appropriate medical advice; genital warts should be assessed through a sexual health service.

Tell us about diabetes, circulation problems, altered sensation, immune conditions and any medication. These details help determine whether clinic treatment is appropriate.

A course rather than a promise

Warts and verrucae may need several sessions, and treatment does not guarantee clearance or prevent recurrence. Your response guides the next step.

Before further treatment, we review the result and healing. If the lesion is not responding as expected, we discuss whether a different approach or onward advice is more suitable.

Aftercare and reducing spread

Follow the aftercare provided for your treatment. Do not pick the lesion. Wash your hands after touching it, avoid sharing towels or shoes, and cover it when swimming. Avoid walking barefoot in communal areas if you have a verruca.

If healing concerns you, contact the clinic. We will explain what is expected for your treated area and when medical advice is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can you confirm it is a verruca from a photograph?

A photograph can help explain your concern, but it does not replace an assessment. Other growths can look similar.

Does it need treatment immediately?

Not always. The consultation considers symptoms, previous treatment and your preferences before deciding on an appropriate plan.

What should I bring?

Tell us how long it has been present, what you have already tried and any changes or symptoms. Bring details of your medication and relevant health conditions.
